The future building is taking shape on paper and being plotted.

On Jan. 18, the School celebrates the official groundbreaking.

1973

The first nine grads of the School receive their M.D. degrees on May 12.

1974

The School of Medicine opens the doors of its new building in August.

1975

The SOM receives a formal invitation from the People's Republic of China to visit.

1976

Truman Medical Center (TMC) opens at its current site.

1977

The Friends of the UMKC School of Medicine is founded.

1978

Harry Jonas, M.D., becomes dean.

1979

Dr. Hsu Chia-yu, from the People's Republic of China, arrives in Kansas City on April 30.

1980

Summer Scholars is established.

1981

The SOM is host of a two-day symposium in April on medical education.

1982

The School begins its second affiliation agreement with a major university.

1983

The School has its first separate commencement ceremony.

1984

Harvard administrators visit the School.

1985

Drs. Pemberton and Moore develop oral and maxillofacial surgery/M.D. programs.

1986

The Eye Foundation is founded by Felix Sabates, M.D.

1987

James Mongan, M.D., is appointed dean.

1988

David Hayes, M.D., '76, is awarded the first E. Grey Dimond, M.D., Take Wing Award.

1989

The Liaison Committee on Medical Education makes a four-day visit to the SOM.

1990

The SOM establishes the Office of Minority Affairs.

1991

The Mary Clark and E. Grey Dimond Scholars' Center, better known as Diastole is completed. The name Diastole, meaning the period of time in which the heart rests, reflects the more than 30 years Dr. Dimond devoted to cardiology.

1992

Drs. William and Marjorie Sirridge endow the Sirridge of Office Medical Humanities.

1993

First Lady Hillary Clinton visits Hospital Hill.

1994

Richard Selzer, M.D., gives the first William Sirridge, M.D., Lectureship.

1995

Dean James Mongan, M.D., is a keynote speaker.

1996

Stuart Munro, M.D., is appointed interim dean.

1997

Dr. Marjorie Sirridge accepts a two-year appointment as dean.

1998

Fred Lyons donates $1.1 million to the Children’s Mercy Hospital Foundation.

1999

Michael Friedland, M.D., is appointed dean.

2000

The SOM announces its development of an Asthma Clinical Research Center.

2001

Betty M. Drees, M.D., is appointed interim dean.

2002

The Shock/Trauma Research Center is established.

2003

Korea University Medical College faculty visit.

2004

School of Medicine students create the Sojourner Clinic.

2005

The Eye Foundation of Kansas City gives UMKC $1.5 million to create an endowed chair.

2006

The School creates the Sirridge Endowed Professorship in Medical Humanities.

2007

In June, the SOM becomes the title sponsor of the 5K portion of the Hospital Hill Run.

2008

Master of Science in Anesthesiology anesthesiologist assistants program welcomes its first class.

2009

The School's Summer Scholars program receives a Presidential Award.

2010

The SOM plans renovation of the School using Caring for Missouri fund.

2011

The UMKC School of Medicine celebrates 40 years of excellence.
