The realization that the field of anesthesiology was experiencing meaningful staffing shortages culminated in the early 1960’s. To meet the growing demands, the pursuit of an educational avenue providing additional physician extenders became a reality with the implementation of an Anesthesiologist Assistant training program in 1969 by Emory University. From then to now, additional training programs have evolved (www.anesthetist.org/content/view/26/40/)*. Currently, states (as well as the District of Columbia and nationally the Department of Veterans Affairs) allowing AA’s to practice by state statute or by physician delegatory authority include Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Ohio, South Carolina, Texas, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. As a dynamic profession that continues to realize exponential growth, undoubtedly additional training sites and states in which to practice will materialize. *other useful resources: |
