Circulation and Reservation of Collection
Circulation
Audiovisual programs are circulated to students, faculty, all Hospital Hill staff, affiliates
and other area healthcare professionals for a period of one week; longer lengths of time may
be arranged depending upon the reservation schedule. Anatomical models and software are not
circulated; these items are on reserve for student use. An exception is faculty use for classroom
presentations.
Reservation for Lecture Support
Booking programs for classroom presentation is strongly encouraged.
MEMC audience statistics remain fairly steady at 40,000 viewers annually. This audience size is derived primarily from slide-lecture presentations, so it is particularly important that 35mm slides be served as early as possible. Do not expect lecture support material to be available unless you book it ahead of time. Please call us at 235-1864 or 235-1832 for information.
Faculty Reserve List
Programs may also be placed on a Faculty Reserve List. This means that the material selected by
faculty are taken out of general circulation and held for the specific use of required class
assignments. To insure that all students have a chance to utilize the program, the circulation
policy generally voids check out - student must view the program(s) in the MEMC. Faculty must
give us the list of reserved items as soon as possible so that any checked-out items may be retrieved
and available when the student requires it. Please call us at 235-1864 or 235-1832 for information.
Closed-Circuit TV Programming
Although the Office of Educational Resources (OER) manages the closed-circuit TV system for
the School of Medicine, the Media Center supervisor creates the program schedule for broadcasts.
Programming is booked in two month cycles to coincide with the publication and distribution of the
Closed-Circuit TV Guide. Faculty members interested in selection are encouraged to contact the
Media Center. There are ten channels dedicated to specific areas in support of student rotations,
continuing medical education, and residency programs (live broadcast link with St. Luke's Hospital
of Kansas City, Mo.) as follows: The CME channel, ER Medicine, "Rounds Review," Resident Conferences,
Surgery, Topics in Clinical Pharmacology, Human Anatomy for Medical Students, Pediatrics, Core
Curriculum in Clinical Pharmacology, and Obstetrics / Gynecology. There is one additional channel
to handle special requests for programming All other information concerning closed-circuit TV
should be addressed to OER's television studio at 1843.
Collection Development
Faculty interested in the availability of new media for classroom support are encouraged to
submit search requests. We have audiovisual and software catalogs and have access to NLM and
other web-based databases for such inquiries, or, if you have a specific title in mind, please
feel free to submit it to the Media Center for possible acquisition. The Media Center budget was
designed to support instructional materials for the education of our medical students. However,
we do acquire some patient education programming through small grants or gifts. Previews and
"demos" of new programs can be arranged through the MEMC staff for faculty inspection before
purchase. Call us at 235-1832.
Faculty Publication Display
Faculty members are encouraged to supply a reprint or clean photocopy of their recently
published material to the Medical Education Media Center. The article or book will be exhibited
in the Faculty Display case on the second floor lobby of the School of Medicine. Only items
submitted by the author(s) will be displayed. For more information, please call us at 235-1864
or 235-1832.
