Overview of Department:
The missions of the Department of Pharmacology are to educate health professional students
concerning the principles and pharmacological basis of therapeutic drugs; to conduct medical
and drug research for better understanding and treatment of diseases; and to provide services
to the University and its community in our field of expertise.
The faculty members in the Department of Pharmacology conduct active research in several
cutting-edge areas, which include molecular mechanisms leading to the development of opioid
tolerance and molecular neurobiology of drug abuse, chemical-induced cellular proliferation,
biology of aging and neurodegenerative diseases, pharmacogenetics and pharmacokinetics, drug
metabolite-mediated cytotoxicity, hypertension, ischemia, mechanisms and control of pain
sensitivity, and research in the safety of biomaterials. Most of these research projects
are supported by funding from the National Institutes of Health and various research or
industrial foundations.
The Pharmacology Department offers advanced degrees to students who are seeking either Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy degree.
