The Department of Surgery at the University of Missouri-Kansas City is based at Truman Medical Center Hospital Hill. In 1995 the residency programs at Truman and at Saint Luke's Hospital
merged, creating a multi-specialty department offering a full range of
surgical services including general, vascular, plastic, neurological,
urologic, thoracic, and trauma.
Between the institutions, almost 18,000 surgeries are performed annually
and there are more than 100 full- and part-time general and subspecialty
surgeons/faculty in private or group practice.
Both Truman and Saint Luke's are Level I trauma centers.
The Department of Surgery provides undergraduate education including
core clinic, subinternships and fourth-year or senior level electives
in surgery and surgical subspecialties.
The residency program accepts four general surgery residents each year and offers three PGY-1 positions for residents requesting one or two preliminary years in surgery.
