Student Services

Outstanding support is available to you from the moment you arrive on campus to the
day you graduate and move on to the next stage in your career. The Office of Student
Affairs at the School of Medicine provides student support in the following areas.

Academic advising
Medical school students are advised by Education Team Coordinators (ETCs) and other Student Affairs staff to provide administrative and academic support to students in Years 1-6. ETCs offer advising, scheduling and registration guidance for both undergraduate and graduate degrees. ETCs serve as a resource for student needs in the areas of financial aid, personal counseling and academic
development. In addition, they act as communication liaisons for administration, docents, students and the health carecommunity.

Academic support
The curriculum in the medical school is consistently challenging, and students must investigate numerous study skills and methods to address these challenges. Academic support is available to assist students in improving or maintaining their academic performance.

  • Examples of this support include a course designed to give all students in their first year at the School of Medicine a core of learning strategies to prevent academic difficulty and to improve higher-order cognitive skills, basic science study groups during the first two years of the program and assistance with various study techniques.
  • In addition, learning support specialists help students develop sound study skills and provide individual assistance, review groups and mock exams in preparation for United States Medical License Exam Steps 1 and 2.
  • The Office of Cultural Enhancement and Diversity provides advocacy, support and referral services for underrepresented students.

Professional Development
During the last four years of the program, students are given the opportunity to travel for their student organizations, research opportunities or international study. Professional development experiences are viewed as informationgathering and information-sharing opportunities that will benefit all medical students.

  • The E. Grey Dimond, M.D., Program of International Medicine develops international opportunities in the curriculum and formalizes international exchange opportunities for students and faculty.
  • Students have additional opportunities for professional development through research and leadership in student organizations.
