“A docent is a mentor that helps guide a student, provides encouragement and shows students how to become better physicians.”

- Matt Baker, Year 4
(Pictured with
David Wooldridge, M.D.)

• One-quarter of the year is spent in clinical assignments.

• Two months a year throughout Years 4-6, students join their full docent unit for daily ward rounds called Do-Ro, or docent rotation, at either Truman Medical Center or St. Luke’s Hospital.

• Students work with full-time hospital-based staff, including physicians, nurses and residents.

• Peer and self-evaluations are used to augment students’ education and training.

• At least three clinical electives are required in Years 4-6. At least three of the clinical electives taken must come from three of the nine general elective categories approved by the School of Medicine.

There are five docent units in the
UMKC School of Medicine. Four are based at
Truman Medical Center, with the fifth unit
learning at St. Luke’s Hospital.
