Medical Student Education

CBM and TBHN serve as the training sites for all students at the UMKC School of Medicine.  Departmental faculty members serve as Year One Docents to students in their first year.  At year four, departmental faculty teach the Behavior Science Course, required for all students in the program.  Then, in year five, all students rotate through the clinical clerkship in psychiatry primarily based at CBM but with ample opportunities for students to gain experience on the outpatient and consultation services at TBHN.  The department offers a wide variety of senior electives to UMKC students and qualified students from other medical schools.

Approximately five percent of the graduating classes of students have entered psychiatric training over the past ten years.  Career counseling is provided via a Psychiatry Interest Group, participation in the Schools Career Fair, and by individual faculty members on request.

Residency Training

The department of psychiatry has operated a residency training program since 1951, producing over 300 psychiatrists.

Currently the residency consists of twenty-four residents (6-6-6-6).  CBM and TBHN are the primary training sites but additional sites include Truman Medical Center (consultation-liaison and neurology), Northwest Missouri Psychiatric Rehabilitation Center (forensic psychiatry), Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Topeka, Kansas (internal medicine, and electives in geriatric psychiatry and addiction psychiatry) and St. Luke’s (electives in ECT, pain and sleep).

The next site visit of residency program will be approximately October, 2011.

Continuing Medical Education

The faculty members in the department of psychiatry are provided with a considerable array of opportunities for career development and continuing education. Journal Club (Mondays at noon) provides a presentation and discussion of a relevant journal article.  Case Conference (Thursdays at noon) reviews a clinical case from the perspective of the person and their biopsychosocial vulnerabilities and strengths. Departmental Grand Rounds (Thursdays at 9: 00 a.m.) is presented weekly by presenters from around the nation as well as from the region and from within the department.  AMA approved CME credit is offered and is without cost to the participant who can maintain a valid Physician’s Recognition Award by regular participation in these activities alone

Psychiatric Pharmacy Practice Residency Program

Since 1981 Western Missouri Mental Health Center/Center for Behavioral Medicine has conducted a psychiatric pharmacy residency program, accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.  The program is one of twenty-one nationally accredited training sites and involves a one year intensive educational curriculum for pharmacists with the doctor of pharmacy degree.  Pharmacists, serving as preceptors, are board certified in the area of psychiatric pharmacy practice and include CBM staff and faculty members from the University of Missouri - Kansas City School of Pharmacy.  Upon successful completion of the residency program a fellowship in clinical drug research is available.  Graduates of the program can be found in all areas of health care including the pharmaceutical industry, academia, and hospital settings.

Psychology Internship Program

The Psychology Internship Program at Western Missouri Mental Health Center/Center for Behavioral Medicine has been fully accredited by the American Psychological Association continuously since 1959.  The internship program provides  a wide range of training experiences and an opportunity for in-depth, comprehensive learning.  Interns are encouraged to select experiences that meet their individual needs and interests.  The program is flexible and allows interns to focus on particular areas of interest while providing needed support and guidance.  There are two full time paid intern positions.

The Hornstra Society (Department-wide Alumni Association)
The Hornstra Society embraces the membership of:

  • graduates of the psychiatry, psychology and psychopharmacy training programs
  • current trainees in these programs
  • current and former faculty members
  • graduates of the UMKC School of Medicine who are psychiatrists

The purpose of the Hornstra Society is to develop a life-long connection with the graduates of the training programs. The primary objectives of this organization are to:

  • Provide an opportunity for professional growth and social interaction among members
  • Assist in efforts to recruit trainees to the program and subsequent membership in the Society
  • Support the mission and goals of the training programs, the Department of Psychiatry, and the School of Medicine
  • Serve as an avenue of quality management of the training programs by observing graduate outcomes
  • Provide a forum for the presentation and exchange of ideas.

American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology

CBM and TBHN serve as a national or regional exam site for the boards about every five years as Kansas City appears with approximately that frequency in the rotation of cities for this event.  At those times a large segment of the departmental faculty are active as examiners.

The attending faculty who are not yet board-certified are expected to be engaged in active pursuit of ABPN certification, and are given considerable financial and supervisory support in this endeavor.  The faculty who are board-certified are active as examiners with the ABPN

The department of psychiatry is committed to preparing residents and young faculty for certification by ABPN.  Residents are given a number of “Mock Oral” exams in the course of their residency in addition, to their participation in the national Psychiatric Residents In-service Training Exam (PRITE).  Performance on both components is factored in to their evaluations for promotion and graduation.
