Thoracic Imaging

The Thoracic Imaging Fellowship program at Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City was approved in 2009. The first thoracic imaging Fellow is scheduled to begin training in the summer of 2010. The one-year fellowship includes involvement in various clinical, educational and research activities to provide the Fellow with a broad experience in the imaging of thoracic diseases.

The Thoracic Imaging Section at the Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City was established in the spring of 2008. The thoracic radiologists in the section review a large number of cases representing a broad spectrum of disease processes. The thoracic radiologists currently interpret imaging studies for Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City, Saint Luke’s Hospital East and the Saint Luke’s Outpatient Imaging Center performing approximately 55,000 chest radiographs and 8,600 advanced imaging studies of the chest and chest interventions each year. Daily consultation with the clinical teams allows the Fellow to develop consultation skills. The fellowship includes dedicated time rotating in cardiovascular imaging as well as several rotations in clinical departments including pulmonary medicine, thoracic oncology and thoracic pathology. Some of these rotations will take place at other academic institutions, when appropriate.

The Fellow is involved in all aspects of clinical thoracic imaging and will work under the supervision of three dedicated thoracic radiologists. The Fellow receives mentoring, academic time and support for research and educational activities.

Departmental resources: 5 multidetector CT scanners (1-40 channel, 2-16 channel, 1- 4 channel), several DR and CR units, 4 MR scanners (including 3 1.5-T and 1 0.35-T), an integrated PET-CT scanner and a fully implemented McKesson PACS system. A 3T MR scanner has been purchased.

The mission of the training program is to develop well trained thoracic imaging specialists who have sufficient expertise to function in academic or private practice environments. At the end of training the fellow is expected to comfortably diagnose a large number of thoracic diseases and provide a focused differential diagnosis as well as provide guidance to the clinical staff in patient management decisions. In addition, the Fellow is expected to acquire expertise in a variety of interventional procedures in the chest. The fellows are intimately involved in the academic activities of the department and participate in teaching medical students, residents and clinical staff.
